Federal Unemployment Insurance Extensions Update

IMPORTANT MESSAGE - March 30, 2012

EMERGENCY UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION (EUC) PROGRAM UPDATE
Changes in Benefit Eligibility

The United States Congress has enacted legislation, P.L. 112-96, which reduces the number of weeks that individuals may receive Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) benefits and which requires EUC claimants to participate in reemployment activities.

Reductions in EUC Benefit Eligibility

Claimants who are now exhausting all 26 weeks of Maryland regular unemployment insurance benefits and file initial claims for EUC benefits will be eligible for up to 34 weeks of EUC benefits. This became effective for individuals filing initial EUC claims from March 26, 2012.

Claimants who filed initial claims for EUC benefits on or after October 9, 2011 through March 25, 2012, will have their balances reduced from a maximum of 47 weeks to 34 weeks. If you are currently filing for EUC benefits, you will receive a letter notifying you of your adjusted Emergency Unemployment Compensation remaining benefit amount. These letters will be mailed during the week of April 2, 2012.

If you filed your initial claim for EUC benefits prior to October 9, 2011, you will be notified at the end of May 2012 only if your claim is subject to a balance reduction.

Work Search Requirements and Reemployment Services

EUC claimants have always been required to actively seek work and keep detailed work search records. Under the new legislation, there is an increased effort on work search and reemployment services. All EUC claimants' work search efforts will be subject to periodic audits. You must look for work and provide your work search records when requested. If you do not, benefits may be denied.

All claimants who file initial EUC claims beginning March 26, 2012, will also be required to participate in reemployment services from the Division of Workforce Development at a One-Stop Career Center. EUC claimants who receive their twentieth week of EUC benefits will also be required to participate in these services. Claimants will be sent appointment notices that will instruct them when and where to report for these services. Failure to report for your appointment will result in a denial of your unemployment insurance benefits.
