Building Safety Month Proclaimed in Maryland

BALTIMORE (April 30, 2019) – Governor Larry Hogan has proclaimed May 2019 as Building Safety Month in the state of Maryland. The month-long observance acknowledges that modern building safety codes, enforced by trained and educated building safety and fire prevention officials, are the foundation of building safety.

"The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation's Division of Labor and Industry houses the Building Codes Administration unit,” said Commissioner of Labor and Industry Matthew Helminiak. “This unit helps ensure that buildings meet the applicable standards for health and safety by adopting a set of state building codes, provides training on the codes for local government employees, and serves as a resource to local jurisdictions, industry and the public.”

Building codes protect public health, safety and general welfare by setting the minimum standards for the design and construction of structures. Design professionals, contractors and governmental building officials use building codes to ensure the buildings we live, work and play in are safe to use.

Building Safety Month recognizes that the growth and strength of our state depends upon the safety and economic value of the homes, buildings and infrastructure that serve our citizens. It is the men and women of the building trades and the hard work they put into the safe construction of buildings throughout the state that ensure Maryland’s strength is mirrored in its physical structures.
