#24-050 In the matter of trainer Antonio Machado:
On May 5, 2024, The Stewards held a hearing for Mr. Machado to answer a complaint made against him by the MJC concerning the health and welfare of a horse in his care “West Star” and his condition prior to being euthanized. Attending the hearing were Equine Medical Director, Dr. Libby Daniel, Vice President of Racing Development, Georganne Hale and MRC Investigator, Enrique Jurado.

Mr. Machado appeared in the absence of counsel and waived his right thereto. Based upon the testimony and evidence presented at the hearing, the Stewards found Antonio Machado in violation of COMAR 09.10.01.57 (K) Trainers – A trainer shall be responsible for the condition of a horse trained by him.

Accordingly, the Stewards hereby order:

That trainer, Antonio Machado be fined in the amount of Two thousand Five hundred dollars ($2,500.).

#24-051 Trainer, John J. Robb is in violation of the HISA shockwave rule #2272 (a)(3). A hearing was held via phone on May 11, 2024, during at which time Mr. Robb explained what happened with the treatment of “Dicey Grey”. The Stewards also spoke with attending Veterinarian, Megan Kerford to discuss the situation. After reviewing all testimony, The Stewards issued the following penalty.

Mr. Robb is fined Two hundred and fifty ($250.00) dollars.

#24-053 In the ninth race at Pimlico Race Course on May 11, 2024, horse #8 “Recognize Me”, ridden by Jockey Jhonathan Mendoza was disqualified from first position and placed second. Inside the 1/8th pole, the rider of #8 Jhonathan Mendoza looked over and then came out into the path of #1 “Ginger Girl” ridden by Tais Lyapustina, without sufficient clearance, forcing her to steady on heels before altering course to the inside.

#24-055 In the matter of the fourth race at Pimlico Racecourse on May 16, 2024, regarding the Official result.

On May 18, 2024 the Stewards notified trainer Karl Grusmark and owner Paul Braverman of a crop violation by the jockey of their horse “Goodnightngodbless” during the running of the fourth race on the May 16, 2024. The Stewards notified Mr. Grusmark and Mr. Braverman that jockey Jeiron Barbosa struck his mount 10 times during the race, which is a HISA violation that calls for the disqualification of said horse. Mr. Grusmark and Mr. Braverman waived their right to a hearing on this matter and have agreed to the penalty.

Based upon the foregoing, the Stewards hereby order that:

The horse, “Goodnightngodbless” be disqualified from the fourth race on May 16, 2024. The Horsemen’s Bookkeeper redistribute all monies for that race in accordance with the following order.
