Definitions of Program Abbreviations

You will find several abbreviations for program names in the directory. They are listed below with their definitions.

ABE (Adult Basic Education)
Adult Basic Education is a federally funded basic skills program that provides instruction in classroom sites throughout Maryland. Basic skills teachers work with low literacy students, as well as more highly skilled students.

GED® Program
The General Educational Development Program prepares students to take the GED® tests; successful completion of the tests results in the awarding of a Maryland High School diploma.

The National External Diploma Program (NEDP®)
The National External Diploma Program is a competency-based program that provides an alternative route to a high school diploma for adults..

ESL (English as a Second Language) or ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)
ESL or ESOL programs provide literacy classes for the foreign-born.
