Maryland Gains 19,300 Jobs in March
Since January 2015, Maryland gained 63,200 jobs
BALTIMORE, MD (April 15, 2016) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data earlier today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 19,300 total jobs over-the-month. The private sector added 16,800 jobs. Three months in 2016 have posted over-the-month job gains. Maryland’s preliminary jobs estimate for February was revised by BLS from a loss of 1,800 to a gain of 200 jobs.
The unemployment rate held steady at 4.7 percent.
"Our state adding 19,300 new jobs in March is excellent news for all Marylanders, as we continue to turn our economy around, grow the private sector, and put people back to work," said Governor Larry Hogan. “From day one, our administration has been committed to creating jobs and fostering a better, more friendly business environment. The creation of 63,000 jobs since January 2015 shows this commitment is paying off for the hard working people of our state.”
"Since Governor Hogan declared that Maryland is open for business in 2015, the state’s economy has added more than 63,200 new jobs — the largest gain Maryland has seen in a long, long time. This month, Maryland businesses created 16,800 jobs, as we continue to see tremendous progress toward ensuring our citizens have jobs and a strong economy,” said Maryland Labor Secretary Kelly M. Schulz. "At the Maryland Department of Labor, we are equipping Maryland workers with the skills that businesses need to thrive through our workforce initiatives including the new youth apprenticeship pilot program in Washington and Frederick Counties and an upcoming business-focused program to be announced soon.”
According to the data released today, the Professional and Business Services increased by 7,900 jobs. (The Administrative and Support and Waste Management and Remediation Services increased by 6,900 jobs, the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services increased by 900 jobs and the Management of Companies and Enterprises increased by 100 jobs.) The Leisure and Hospitality increased by 5,600 jobs. (The Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation increased by 2,900 jobs and the Accommodation and Food Services increased by 2,700 jobs.) The Mining, Logging and Construction increased by 3,400 jobs. The Education and Health Services increased by 1,500 jobs. (The Educational Services increased by 2,300 jobs and the Health Care and Social Assistance decreased by 800 jobs.)
