Temporary Eyelash Extension Technician License – Now Available - Cosmetologists
The Maryland Board of Cosmetologists has launched a Temporary Eyelash Extension Technician License to support professionals currently providing eyelash extension services. Maryland law now allows the Board to create a limited license specifically for eyelash extension technicians, providing a more focused credential for this specialized service.
This temporary license ensures that lash technicians can continue to work without interruption, while the standard license and examination process are implemented (anticipated in late 2026).
Who Should Apply
Individuals who provide eyelash extension services in Maryland and do not currently hold a cosmetologist or esthetician license should apply for the Temporary Eyelash Extension Technician License.
Professionals who already hold a cosmetologist or esthetician license may continue performing eyelash extension services under their existing license.
Requirements for Temporary License Holders
Temporary license holders must:
- Provide eyelash extension services only in a salon or barbershop that has an active permit issued by the Maryland Board of Cosmetologists or the Maryland Board of Barbers.
- Submit an application acknowledging that they will only provide eyelash services in a Board-permitted salon/shop.
- Follow all Board health and safety regulations.
Individuals who wish to operate their own facility must obtain a salon or shop permit from the Board.
License Duration and Transition
The Temporary Eyelash Extension Technician License is now available (launched April 1, 2026). It may be renewed once for an additional year.
This temporary license allows technicians to continue practicing while working toward the standard eyelash extension license, which will be launched in late 2026.
To obtain the standard license, lash technicians will be required to complete Board-approved training and pass a State Board theory and practical examination. Working toward the standard license means enrolling in an MHEC-approved Private Career School for the 100-hour required training.
Individuals who do not obtain a temporary license by December 31, 2026 must cease providing eyelash extension services until they meet the requirements for the standard license.
