Krishna Bigby – Apprenticeship at Delaware Elevator – WorkSource Montgomery – Success Story - Workforce Development and Adult Learning
Krishna Bigby’s story begins like that of many immigrants to the United States (U.S.). He left his impoverished home country of Jamaica in search of a better life. Krishna knew he would need employment to support himself in his new country, but he also knew he wanted more than a job. He wanted a career.
After considering his strengths and interests, Krishna decided to pursue the goal of becoming an elevator repair technician and mechanic. He learned that Delaware Elevator Company was advertising an opportunity for an apprentice, so he applied. “They took a chance on me,” said Krishna, “for which I will be forever grateful.” During the first year of his apprenticeship, Krishna earned a GED® and completed Occupational Safety and Health Administration training, in addition to completing a year of on-the-job training.
Krishna is now in the second year of his apprenticeship and is pleased with his career choice and the progress he continues to make. “I have learned a lot and have enjoyed working with the different mechanics. I enjoy the problem solving of challenges and helping my team. I appreciate the support that the mechanics and the office staff at Delaware Elevator have given me so that I can succeed.”
