Jose Canizales – LAYC-MMYC - Success Story - Workforce Development and Adult Learning
Jose is a current Latin American Youth Center-Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers (LAYC-MMYC) participant. He joined the LAYC-MMYC Prince George’s County Workforce Development Program in January 2020 in hopes to attain his high school diploma via the GED® program. He also joined the program to receive job readiness training that would prepare him to secure employment and advance in his future career. Jose heard about the program through his brother, a former program participant. He knew that this program would benefit him in accomplishing not only his educational but also career goals as well.
Jose started attending GED® classes right away. However, in March 2020 and as a result of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Jose and his family fell victim to unemployment and homelessness. Jose knew that at this time he needed to find a job to provide financial support to his mother. Jose contacted the program’s Job Developer and was able to obtain employment during the same week. Since then, Jose has been able to provide financial support for his family while still attending GED® education classes regularly. Jose has just recently taken a practice GED® exam and is ready to take his first official exam this fall. Jose is now on his way and committed to achieving his future goals.
