On November 21, 2024, the Maryland Labor and Transportation departments released a call for proposals for the Road to Careers program. Labor will hold a pre-proposal conference on December 9, 2024 at 11:30 a.m. To RSVP, please e-mail road2.careers@maryland.gov. The application and the resources can be found below.

Under Governor Moore’s leadership, Maryland’s Labor and Transportation departments have launched the Road to Careers grant program, a $24M initiative to increase skilled workers in the transportation sector. This program uses Registered Apprenticeship, Pre-Apprenticeship, and Integrated Education and Training models to prepare job seekers for careers such as construction laborers, equipment operators, and skilled trade workers.

To ensure equity, grantee organizations will provide holistic support, including help with transportation, childcare costs, access to mental health support, and necessary employment tools.

Who can Receive Grant Funding?

Maryland Department of Labor has released an initial investment of $4M for Road to Careers. For this inaugural round of grantmaking, awards are capped at $500,000 and the period of performance is 36 months. The following entities are encouraged to apply:

  • Local Workforce Development Areas
  • Community-based Organizations
  • Workforce Training Providers
  • Registered Apprenticeship Sponsors
  • Adult Education Providers
  • Community Colleges
  • Organizations serving immigrants and refugees
  • Other entities, as deemed allowable by the Maryland Department of Labor

Road to Careers is designed to expand opportunities to Marylanders who want to pursue a career in the skilled trades but may need extra support to get started on the path to success. The initiative is meant to support individuals who may face barriers to employment, including, but not limited to, low-income, justice-involved, English language learners, youth who have aged out of foster care, and more.

Applications must be submitted electronically to road2.careers@maryland.gov by February 28, 2025 for consideration. Award announcements will be made in May 2025.
