The Maryland Division of Unemployment Insurance offers several ways for you to ask questions about unemployment insurance.
Support for Claimants
To file a claim, complete your weekly certification, and check your action items
You can log on to the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Portal (BEACON) 24/7 to manage your unemployment insurance activities.
To track your weekly job search activities, look for work, and create a résumé
Log on to the Maryland Workforce Exchange 24/7 to continue your path to finding your new job.
To complete your weekly work search certification, reset your PIN, or check your payment status
You can reach the automated phone system 24/7 by calling:
- 410-949-0022 (if calling from the Baltimore area or out of state)
- 800-827-4839 (if calling from Maryland but outside of the Baltimore area)
- If you can’t complete your weekly certification online, this is the fastest way to complete your weekly certification. In less than 10 minutes, you will create a PIN and answer the 7 required weekly certification questions.
To file a claim or ask a question

The Division of Unemployment Insurance offers in-person assistance with unemployment insurance claims and weekly certifications at 4 locations noted below. Except for the Baltimore City location, these centers have computers that are free to use. Staff from the unemployment insurance and workforce divisions are there to help you:
- Understand the unemployment insurance claims process
- Apply for jobs
- Help with passwords and account lookup
- Assist with identity verification process
- Demonstrate how to use the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Portal (BEACON) and the Maryland Workforce Exchange websites
- Answer general questions
Please note that while staff do their best to resolve unemployment insurance issues quickly, you may not get a same-day resolution, depending on the nature of your question or the specific challenge you are experiencing.

An advocate is someone whose job is to help you get a fair opinion on the next steps in your unemployment insurance benefits process.
If you received a decision about qualifying for benefits that you don’t agree with, need help understanding the appeals process, or would like someone to help you navigate any part of the unemployment process, you can contact the unemployment insurance claimant advocate.
To submit an inquiry about a claim and reach the claimant advocate (formerly “ombudsman”), please fill out the Ombudsman Inquiry Form and email it to ui.ombudsman@maryland.gov.
Employers and Third-Party Agents
Use the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Portal (BEACON) for employers to:
- Submit wage reports, pay contributions, and make adjustments
- Access tax rates
- Update account information (address, contact information, and ownership)
- File an appeal
- Submit supporting documents
- View correspondence
- Set up a third-party agent to perform unemployment insurance tasks on their behalf

Use the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Portal (BEACON) for third-party agents to:
- Access a client’s account based on power of attorney privileges
- Obtain rate information for clients
- File wage reports and pay unemployment insurance taxes on behalf of clients

Note: Individuals and employers with unpaid, undisputed state tax liabilities can’t renew a Maryland driver’s license or vehicle registration until the liability is paid. Accessible Contact Options for People with Disabilities
Maryland Relay offers free resources to enable individuals who have difficulty communicating on a standard telephone to make and receive phone calls. Maryland Relay is available in English and Spanish.
You can call 7-1-1 to reach Maryland Relay or use the links below.
Services include, but are not limited to:
- Braille TTY: Allows the user to type their side of a telephone conversation and includes a Braille display for reading the other person’s responses.
- Captioned Telephone: Displays text of the caller/recipient’s words, allowing the other person to read what the individual is saying during a phone conversation.
- Remote Conference Captioning (RCC): Allows users to read text of what participants say during conference calls, webinars, etc.
- American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters: To schedule interpreting services, call 667-207-6520 (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or contact the Maryland Relay.
- Maryland.gov Website Accessibility: If you’re using assistive technology to access Maryland.gov and have challenges accessing any information, you can request the content in another format.
